Generator rewinding in Dubai
What generator rewinding involves
Generator rewinding replaces the copper windings of a generator or alternator that have burned out, shorted or failed insulation testing, restoring stable voltage output. Anchor Marine Engineering rewinds all types of generators and alternators in its workshop at Al Jadaf Dry Dock, Dubai.
The work covers the stator, the rotor (field winding) and the exciter, as the fault requires. Every rewind uses Class H insulation, suited to UAE heat and humidity, and every rotor is dynamically balanced before the generator goes back.
When the engine that drives the generator also needs work, our engine and generator overhauling team handles it, so the whole set can be repaired by one team. The generator’s control, AMF, ATS and synchronizing panels are built in-house too: see generator synchronizing panels.
Alongside generator rewinding we carry out alternator repair and generator repair in the workshop: generator stator rewinding, alternator stator winding replacement, and rotor and exciter rewinds, with every unit tested before it is returned.

What we rewind
Generator windings we rewind
A generator has more than one set of windings. We rewind whichever have failed and balance the rotor before it goes back.
- 01
Stator rewinding
The main stator windings, rewound with new copper and Class H insulation.
- 02
Rotor rewinding
The rotor field windings that create the magnetic field.
- 03
Exciter rewinding
Exciter stator and rotor windings that supply the field current.
- 04
Rotor balancing
Every rewound rotor dynamically balanced before it goes back.

Generators we rewind
Marine, standby and industrial generators
We rewind all types of generators and alternators, from standby generator sets to marine generators and industrial alternators.
- Marine generators
- Diesel generator sets
- Standby power generators
- Industrial alternators
- Single-phase & three-phase
- Generator exciters
Rewinding process
How a generator is rewound
The standard steps, from inspection to the generator back in service.
- 01
Inspect & test
Insulation resistance testing and fault diagnosis to find the failed windings.
- 02
Fixed quote
Written assessment and a fixed quote before work starts.
- 03
Strip
Failed windings removed and the core prepared.
- 04
Rewind
New copper windings with Class H insulation.
- 05
Varnish & balance
Windings varnished and baked; the rotor dynamically balanced.
- 06
Test & return
Insulation resistance, surge and load testing, then back in service.
When to call us
Signs a generator needs rewinding
Winding faults usually show before a generator stops completely. These are the signs to act on.
- Unstable or low voltage
- Overheating windings
- Burning smell
- Failed insulation test
- Tripping under load
- Visibly burnt windings

Generator rewinding questions
Not covered here? Call +971 56 278 5002 or email info@anchormarineeng.ae.
What is generator rewinding?
Generator rewinding replaces the copper windings of a generator or alternator that have burned out, shorted or failed insulation testing. The failed windings are removed, new windings are installed, varnished and baked, and the machine is tested so it delivers stable voltage again.
Which generators do you rewind?
All types of generators and alternators, including marine generators, diesel generator sets, standby power generators and industrial alternators, single-phase and three-phase.
Which parts of a generator can be rewound?
The main stator, the rotor (field winding) and the exciter. We rewind whichever windings have failed, as the inspection shows.
How long does generator rewinding take?
Larger generator alternators typically take 3 to 7 working days, depending on winding complexity. We confirm the timeline with the quote.
What insulation do you use?
Class H insulation on every rewind, suited to the heat and humidity of the UAE.
Do you balance the rotor after rewinding?
Yes. Every rotor rewound in our workshop is dynamically balanced before it goes back into service, on our balancing machine for rotors up to 2.5 tons.
Is there a warranty on generator rewinding?
Yes. Anchor Marine Engineering provides a warranty on rewinding work. Contact us for the warranty terms that apply to your job.
Can you also overhaul the engine that drives the generator?
Yes. Our ship repair team overhauls marine diesel engines and generators, so the engine and the generator windings can be handled as one job.
What do you need to quote a generator rewind?
The generator or alternator nameplate details (kVA, voltage, speed), the make and model, the fault you are seeing, where the generator is, photos of the machine and nameplate, and when you need it back in service.
How much does generator rewinding cost?
The cost depends on the generator’s rating, which winding has failed (stator, rotor or exciter) and the condition of the core. We inspect and test the generator first and then quote. Send the nameplate details and a description of the fault for an initial estimate.
