Heaters for the oil and engine systems on board
Heavy fuel oil has to be heated before it can be pumped, cleaned in the purifier and injected into the engine. Lube oil is heated before it is cleaned, and an engine on standby is kept warm so it is ready to start. On many vessels that heat comes from electric heaters in the pipelines, tanks and engine cooling system.
Anchor Marine Engineering manufactures these heaters at its Al Jadaf workshop: fuel oil preheaters (heavy fuel oil heaters), HFO purifier heaters, HFO and sludge tank heaters, lube oil heaters and preheaters, jacket water heaters (preheaters) and electric marine thermal oil heaters. They are built on our inline (circulation), flange immersion and screw-plug immersion heater designs.
Each heater is built to the ship’s voltage and wattage and to the connections of the old unit, from one replacement to a complete set, and tested before delivery. The temperature control panels that run them are built in the same workshop.

Heater types
Marine oil heaters we manufacture
Each type is made to order for the system it serves, as a new heater or a replacement for the one on board.
- 01
Fuel oil heaters
Heavy fuel oil (HFO) preheaters in the line to the engine, HFO purifier (separator) heaters, and HFO tank heaters for settling, service and sludge tanks, so heavy fuel oil can be pumped, cleaned and burned.
- 02
Lube oil heaters
Lube oil purifier heaters, and sump and tank heaters that keep lubricating oil at temperature for cleaning and for engines on standby.
- 03
Jacket water preheaters
Jacket water heaters (preheaters) that keep the engine’s cooling water warm while it is on standby, so main engines, auxiliary engines and diesel generators are ready to start.
- 04
Thermal oil heaters
Electric marine thermal oil heaters (thermic fluid heaters) that heat the oil circulated to the tanks and equipment that need heat.
Which heater?
Which heater for which system
The usual heater design for each system on board. We build to the layout and connections already on the vessel.
| System | What the heater does | Usual design |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel oil preheater (booster or heavy fuel oil heater) | Heats heavy fuel oil in the line to the engine so it reaches the right viscosity for injection | Inline (circulation) heater |
| HFO purifier heater (fuel oil purifier heater) | Heats fuel oil before the purifier (separator) so water and dirt separate out | Inline (circulation) heater |
| HFO tank heaters: settling, service and sludge tanks | Keeps the oil in the tank warm enough to pump | Flange or screw-plug immersion heater |
| Lube oil purifier heater | Heats lube oil before it is cleaned in the purifier | Inline (circulation) heater |
| Lube oil preheaters for sumps and tanks | Keeps lubricating oil warm in tanks and on standby engines | Screw-plug or flange immersion heater |
| Jacket water heater (preheater) | Keeps the engine cooling water warm on standby, ready to start | Inline (circulation) heater with control panel |
| Thermal oil system | Heats the thermal oil circulated around the vessel | Inline or flange immersion heater |
| Hot water | Hot water for the accommodation and galley | Hot water calorifier |

What heaters does a ship’s engine room use?
The main ones are fuel oil preheaters and purifier heaters, fuel oil tank heaters, lube oil heaters, jacket water preheaters and, on some vessels, thermal oil heaters. We manufacture all of these at our workshop in Dubai.
What is a fuel oil preheater?
A fuel oil preheater, also called a booster heater, HFO heater or heavy fuel oil heater, is an inline heater in the fuel line that heats heavy fuel oil so it reaches the right viscosity for the engine’s injection system.
Why is fuel oil heated before the purifier?
Heavy fuel oil is heated before it enters the purifier (separator) so it flows more easily and water and dirt separate from it properly. The same applies to lube oil purifiers.
What is a jacket water preheater?
A jacket water preheater, also called a jacket water heater, keeps the cooling water in an engine’s jacket warm while the engine is on standby, so it can start and take load without a cold start. It is used on main and auxiliary engines and on standby diesel generators.
Do you make lube oil heaters?
Yes. We make lube oil purifier heaters and heaters for lube oil sumps and tanks, built to your voltage, wattage and connections.
Do you make electric thermal oil heaters?
Yes. We manufacture electric thermal oil (thermic fluid) heaters to your specification.
Can you make a replacement for a heater already on board?
Yes. Send the old heater as a sample, a drawing, or the nameplate details and connection sizes, and we will build a replacement to fit the existing pipework, flange or socket.
Do you build the control panels as well?
Yes. Temperature control panels with thermostats and digital displays are built in the same workshop, so the heater and its controls come from one team.
What do you need to quote a marine oil heater?
The system it is for, the voltage and wattage, the connection type and size (flange, thread or pipe), the liquid and the temperature you need, any control requirement and the quantity. A photo of the old heater or its nameplate helps.
