Anchor Marine Engineering has rewound motors at its workshop at Al Jadaf Dry Dock, Dubai, since 1995. Chiller and refrigeration compressors are driven by electric motors that run long hours in UAE heat, and a burnt winding stops the whole cooling system. Crane motor rewinding for hoist and travel motors on EOT, overhead and gantry cranes in plants and warehouses, and on port and marine cranes. The same team rewinds hoist and winch motors, including deck winches and windlasses, slip ring (wound rotor) motors and crane brake motors.

Rewinding vs replacing

Motor rewinding or replacement? How to decide

Rewinding an electric motor is typically 30–50% less expensive than buying a new replacement, especially for motors above 5KW. It avoids waiting weeks for a motor to be imported, keeps the original equipment specification, and can extend motor life by upgrading insulation from Class F to Class H.

In Dubai’s climate, with temperatures regularly above 45°C and coastal salt air, insulation breakdown is the most common cause of motor failure. A rewind with Class H insulation addresses it directly.

When replacement is the better option: if the stator core is damaged (burnt laminations), the frame is cracked, or the motor is very small (under 1KW).
Marine and specialist motors: where a direct replacement would have to be imported, rewinding or overhauling is usually the fastest route back to full operation.

What is the difference between motor rewinding and motor overhauling?

Motor rewinding addresses electrical failure: replacing the copper windings inside the stator or armature when they have burned out or failed insulation testing. Motor overhauling is broader. It includes rewinding where needed plus mechanical restoration of the bearings, shaft, end shields, cooling system, commutator (on DC motors) and frame, returning the motor to as-new condition electrically and mechanically. We offer both for all motor types up to 900KW.

How much does motor rewinding cost in Dubai?

Cost depends on the motor size (KW), voltage (LV or HV), motor type (AC or DC) and the extent of the damage. We inspect the motor free of charge and give you a fixed quote before starting any work, including a written comparison of rewind and replacement cost.

How long does motor rewinding take?

Most small to medium motors (under 50KW) are rewound and returned within 24–72 hours. Larger motors and generator alternators may take 3–7 working days, depending on winding complexity.

What is the maximum motor size you can rewind?

What are the signs that an electric motor needs rewinding?

Common symptoms are a burning smell or visible burn marks on the windings, the motor repeatedly tripping its breaker, excessive heat during operation, reduced power output or slow start-up, visible insulation damage or cracking, and a failed insulation resistance test.

Do you also rewind generators?

Yes. We rewind all types of generators and alternators: stator, rotor and exciter windings, with Class H insulation and the rotor dynamically balanced before it goes back.

Do you rewind screw compressor and chiller compressor motors?

Yes. What is motor rewinding?

Motor rewinding is the replacement of the copper windings of a motor’s stator or armature after they burn out or fail insulation testing. The old coils are stripped, new coils are wound and insulated, the winding is varnished and baked, and the motor is tested before it goes back into service.

Do you rewind crane motors?

Yes. We rewind crane hoist and travel motors for EOT, overhead and gantry cranes in plants and warehouses, and for port and marine cranes, in our Al Jadaf workshop, with the same Class H insulation and testing as every other rewind. On crane brake motors we check and repair the brake as well.

Do you rewind slip ring motors?

Yes. We rewind slip ring (wound rotor) motors, including the stator and the rotor, and turn the slip rings true. They are common on cranes and hoists.

Do you rewind winch and windlass motors?

Yes. We rewind electric winch and windlass motors from ships’ decks, as well as electric hoist motors, and test them before they go back into service.
